Buying speakers & parts
How much are your Bose 802 speakers?
The used single is £195, the pair is £345 and the used Bose 802C controller is £195. Each listing has 2 in stock. Catalogue parts and Bose 302 stock remain 0 with setup prices. Online checkout is not open yet.
Which Bose 802 spares can I ask about?
Ask about replacement drivers, foam surrounds, lid latches and keeper plates, rubber feet, grilles and retainers, and cabinet gaskets. Supply is by enquiry; listing a part category does not confirm stock.
Are your parts genuine Bose or aftermarket?
Ask for the origin and condition of the specific item. Historical Bose reference numbers identify parts in the source manual; they do not establish that an offered replacement is genuine, new or available.
Can I order or pay online?
Available speakers and controllers can be added to the cart, with quantities limited to stock. Online checkout is not open yet. You can prepare an enquiry to arrange purchase; no payment or reservation is taken automatically.
Do you offer repair services?
Our focus is speakers and parts, with minor services such as part identification, small cabinet fittings and cable or connector checks. Ask about your specific job before sending equipment.
What should I check before buying used 802s?
Confirm the exact series, condition of all eight drivers, surrounds, grilles, cabinet, input panel, lids and fittings. Ask what testing has been carried out and whether the matching controller, stands or cables are included; do not assume accessories are supplied.
Core system & design basics
What is the Bose 802?
A passive professional PA loudspeaker using eight small full-range drivers in an articulated array. It needs a suitable amplifier and model-appropriate active equalization.
Why doesn't it have a tweeter or woofer?
The full-range array covers the intended working band without a conventional woofer-to-tweeter crossover. This does not mean perfectly uniform response in every room or the absence of protection and processing circuits.
What is an Articulated Array?
Bose’s term for its angled driver arrangement. Series II documentation specifies broad nominal coverage of 120° horizontally and 100° vertically; positioning and room reflections still matter.
What is the weight of a Bose 802 speaker?
The Series II reference specifies 14 kg (31 lb) per loudspeaker. Weight differs between generations and can change when a lid, mounting hardware or other accessories are included.
What are the dimensions?
The published Series II dimensions are approximately 33 × 52 × 32 cm, height × width × depth. Other generations differ; check whether a measurement includes a transit cover or brackets.
What is the coverage pattern?
The Series II reference specifies a nominal 120° horizontal by 100° vertical pattern. That is a loudspeaker specification, not a guarantee of even coverage in every room.
Do they have a built-in pole mount?
Check the exact cabinet and the manufacturer’s approved stand adapter. Do not assume a generic 35 mm top-hat fits an older 802. Mounting accessories and cabinet inserts vary.
What is the maximum SPL?
The Series II reference gives 114 dB average and 123 dB peak. Other models and test methods differ; maximum output also depends on amplification, processing and operating conditions.
Are they good for live bands?
They can serve vocal and instrument reinforcement when correctly configured. Required output, room size and low-frequency content determine whether additional loudspeakers or subwoofers are appropriate.
Are they good for DJ use?
They can be part of a DJ system, but bass level and programme material matter. A suitable subwoofer may be useful for bass-heavy material; use documented crossover and protection settings.
What material are the cone surrounds made of?
Surround construction varies by driver and revision, including replacements fitted during a speaker’s life. Inspect the actual drivers rather than assuming every Series II cabinet has the same surround material.
Why do they look like "luggage"?
The transport-oriented versions use a detachable protective front cover. Not every later installed-sound version has the same lid arrangement, and lids are not assumed included in an advert.
Where were they manufactured?
Use the manufacturing label on the actual cabinet or controller. A Bose model name alone does not establish a country of manufacture for every production run.
Controllers & active EQ
Do I absolutely need the Bose active equalizer?
Use the active equalization specified for your model. This may be provided by the matching controller or an appropriate DSP with verified settings. An arbitrary EQ setting is not a documented substitute.
What does the Bose EQ actually do?
It shapes the signal to produce the intended overall system response. The required filters and equalization are model-specific; a generic description of a bass-and-treble boost is not a complete setup prescription.
Where do I connect the equalizer in my signal chain?
Normally between the mixer’s line-level output and the power amplifier’s input. Never feed an amplifier’s loudspeaker output into a line-level controller input.
Can I use an effects loop?
Only when the mixer provides a suitable master insert or other correctly routed line-level path, with compatible levels and connections. A generic effects send/return is not automatically equivalent.
Can I use a standard 31-band graphic equalizer instead?
A 31-band graphic EQ alone is not a verified replacement for the specified system response and protection filters. Use the documented controller or an accurately configured supported processor.
Can I use a modern digital speaker processor?
Yes, if its settings implement the correct model-specific equalization, filtering and protection. Confirm the speaker generation and amplifier before selecting a preset.
What happens if I run them without the EQ?
The speaker will not have its intended system response. Turning up the amplifier or adding arbitrary EQ to compensate can create excessive demand; missing EQ alone does not prove a particular driver has failed.
Does the EQ have a subwoofer output?
This depends on the controller. Some provide outputs and operating modes for associated bass systems. Check the exact unit’s connection diagram; do not assume every output is a subwoofer output.
Are older analog EQs compatible with newer series speakers?
Check the published compatibility for the particular controller, speaker and operating mode. Neither universal compatibility nor universal incompatibility across all generations is a reliable rule.
Does the EQ require rack ears?
Not necessarily for standalone use. Some compact controllers need a specific optional mounting kit to fit a 19-inch rack. Check the dimensions and correct rack accessories for the unit.
What is the "Sharp" switch on older EQs?
Check the actual switch label and controller manual. “Sharp” may describe filter behaviour in documentation rather than name a front-panel control. The supplied 802C photograph has low-frequency and high-frequency cut switches.
Are the EQ inputs balanced or unbalanced?
They vary. For example, the 1997 original/SMD 802C manual identifies balanced XLR inputs and unbalanced quarter-inch inputs. Connector shape alone does not establish how a circuit is balanced.
Can I run two amplifiers off one EQ?
Possibly, using a suitable line-level distribution arrangement. Confirm the controller’s output drive capability, the amplifier input impedances and grounding; do not join amplifier outputs together.
Is there a software plugin for the EQ curve?
Use the current manufacturer documentation for supported DSP software and speaker presets. A third-party plugin or downloaded curve should not be assumed to reproduce the required processing and protection.
How can I tell if my analog EQ is broken?
Noise, low output or altered response can have several causes, including routing, cables and level settings. Compare the unit against its documented test procedure; symptoms alone do not identify a failed capacitor.
Does the EQ boost consume a lot of amplifier power?
Boosting a frequency band increases the signal demand in that band and can reduce headroom. Correct filtering, amplifier limits and operating levels matter more than assuming one universal power multiplier.
What is the crossover frequency on the EQ sub output?
The 1997 802C manual specifies 180 Hz in bi-amplified mode. Other controllers and system modes can differ, so use the relevant connection diagram and technical reference.
Can I buy third-party EQs for the 802?
Alternative processors may be suitable only where their documented settings correctly implement the required speaker processing. A product described as “for 802” still needs its compatibility checked.
Amplification & wiring
How much amplifier power do I need?
Follow the exact speaker’s amplifier recommendation and the amplifier’s load rating. For Series II, the cited sheet recommends 240–480 W. That recommendation does not remove the need for sensible levels and protection.
Can I bridge an amplifier to run them?
Only if the amplifier supports bridged operation into the connected load and the resulting power is appropriate. Bridging changes the amplifier’s load requirements; follow its manual.
How do I daisy-chain two 802s together?
Where the input connectors are documented as parallel, a second speaker cable can link to another cabinet. First confirm the resulting amplifier load, connector wiring and cable capacity.
What happens to impedance when daisy-chaining?
Two nominal 8-ohm speakers connected in parallel present a nominal 4-ohm load. Connecting cabinets through parallel sockets does not create a series connection.
Can I run four 802s on one standard stereo amplifier?
Potentially, with two nominal 8-ohm cabinets in parallel per channel, if the amplifier supports that nominal 4-ohm load and suitable operating power. “Standard stereo amplifier” alone is not a sufficient specification.
What gauge speaker wire should I use?
Choose the conductor cross-section for the cable length, power, load and acceptable loss. Use a purpose-made loudspeaker cable and the amplifier or system designer’s cable guidance rather than a universal length rule.
Can I use a guitar cable to connect them?
Use loudspeaker cable between an amplifier and a passive speaker. Typical instrument cables have a different construction and conductor capacity; they are not a substitute for a suitable speaker lead.
What is the light bulb inside doing?
Where a lamp is part of the documented protection or impedance-control network, its resistance changes with heating. A lamp and a resettable polymer PTC are not automatically interchangeable components.
Why did my 802 suddenly drop in volume?
Possible causes include a protection circuit, amplifier limiting, damaged driver, poor connection or upstream signal fault. Reduce the level and check the signal chain; do not bypass protection to diagnose it.
Can I use a 70V/100V distributed line amplifier?
Not directly with a normal low-impedance cabinet. A suitable, model-supported matching transformer arrangement is required. Do not assume that a transformer named for another Bose model fits.
Do they sound good with tube amplifiers?
Choose an amplifier for its documented output, supported load and suitability for the speaker system. Tube or solid-state construction alone does not prove that an amplifier is suitable or unsuitable.
Is it easy to blow an 802 speaker?
Excessive voltage, sustained overload, inappropriate low-frequency content or clipping can damage drivers. A small amplifier is not inherently destructive, and a large one is not automatically safe.
Can I use them with a powered mixer?
Only if the mixer permits the correct processing to be placed before its power-amplifier stage. Never connect its speaker-level output to the controller. Consult the powered mixer’s routing diagram.
Should I over-power or under-power them?
Neither is a universal safe choice. Use suitable amplifier power, correct EQ and filtering, and control the operating level. Avoid clipping and sustained overload regardless of the amplifier’s nominal rating.
What pin configuration do the SpeakON jacks use?
Confirm the pin assignments in the exact cabinet and cable documentation. NL4 has four contacts, and modified equipment can use different wiring. Do not rely solely on a connector’s appearance.
Can I use a Bose commercial amplifier?
Possibly, where the model supplies the required output and load capability. DSP features and speaker presets vary; do not assume that every PowerSpace or PowerMatch amplifier has the same processing built in.
Maintenance & fault finding
What is "foam rot"?
Ageing foam surrounds can crumble, split or detach. Deterioration depends on the driver material and its environment, so there is no fixed service-life deadline that applies to every 802.
How do I check for foam rot?
Inspect the surrounds using the correct grille-removal procedure for your model. Look for cracks, missing material or separation without pressing the cone or damaging the surround.
Can rotted 802 drivers be repaired?
Re-foaming may be possible if the original driver is otherwise serviceable and a correctly sized/profiled surround is available. It will not repair every coil, magnet or basket fault.
Is it hard to re-foam them yourself?
It requires careful alignment, suitable materials and an assessment of the driver’s other faults. A kit of the same nominal diameter is not automatically correct. BOSEMAN’s current service focus is minor jobs and parts enquiries.
Where can I buy replacement drivers?
Use a model-specific parts reference and confirm the supplier’s item, condition and origin. BOSEMAN lists historical references, but catalogue-parts stock is currently 0; the listing does not promise an available replacement.
Are all 8 drivers identical?
The documented original cabinet uses eight identical full-range drivers, but replacement history and later revisions must be checked. The 1979 manual describes series wiring, not a universal series-parallel network.
What is the impedance of an individual internal driver?
The original 1979 manual specifies 1 ohm per driver, eight in series for an 8-ohm cabinet. Do not apply that individual-driver specification to every later or modified system without checking its documentation.
How do I know if an individual driver is blown?
A fault may show as an open circuit, distortion, rubbing or no acoustic output, but each symptom needs diagnosis. Do not force a cone inward or assume that any rubbing means a melted coil.
Can I replace just one blown driver?
Possibly, if the replacement matches the required part revision, impedance, fit and polarity. Inspect the other drivers and confirm that the cabinet has not already been modified.
Why do my speakers rattle at low volumes?
Possible causes include loose fittings, wiring contact, damaged cones, a rubbing coil or enclosure components. Locate the source at a modest level before choosing a replacement part.
How do I remove the front plastic grille?
Follow the exact model’s service procedure. The original 1979 instructions describe clinch nuts and a grille retainer, rather than a universal set of perimeter screws. Avoid forcing the frame.
Can I spray-paint the cabinets?
Only using the preparation, coating and masking guidance appropriate to the exact enclosure and finish. Keep paint and solvents off drivers, connectors and moving parts; alterations can affect the original environmental performance.
How do I fix a broken input jack?
Identify the exact jack, wiring and panel arrangement first. Access and replacement procedures vary. Incorrect polarity, insulation or wiring can create faults, so the connector must be matched to the model.
Why is there no sound coming out at all?
Check the source, routing, controller, amplifier and leads before assuming a cabinet fault. Protection parts, wiring and drivers can also fail. Use the relevant schematic and avoid bypassing protection.
What causes a "muddy" sound?
Incorrect processing is one possibility, alongside room acoustics, placement, excessive bass settings or damaged components. A sound description by itself does not identify a single cause.
Can I wash the fabric grilles?
Follow the care instructions for that particular grille material. Do not soak a grille assembly indiscriminately or let water reach the drivers and electrical parts. Allow any permitted cleaning to dry fully before reassembly.
Are aftermarket drivers as good as original Bose drivers?
A replacement must match electrical, mechanical and acoustic requirements. An aftermarket item is not established as equivalent just because its size and nominal impedance match; confirm its specification and suitability.
How do I test the total cabinet resistance with a multimeter?
With equipment disconnected, a resistance reading can help find an open or short, but it is not a full performance test. DC resistance differs from nominal impedance; there is no single pass value for every 802 revision.
Can moisture inside the cabinet damage it?
Yes. Moisture can affect cone materials, wiring, contacts and other components, particularly where water is trapped or seals are damaged. A weather rating does not make a cabinet immune to deterioration.
How long do Bose 802s usually last?
Useful life depends on condition, environment, loading and repairs. Some older units remain serviceable for decades, but no lifespan or warranty can be inferred from age or the Bose 802 name alone.
